Fiat Automobiles, also known as FIAT (an acronym for Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino, or in French "Società Italiana d'Automobili di Torino"), is an Italian automobile manufacturer based in Turin. Founded in 1899 by Giovanni Agnelli, Fiat began by producing steam-powered vehicles, but quickly moved into the production of gasoline-powered cars.
In the early 20th century, Fiat became one of the leading car manufacturers in Italy with models such as the Fiat 500 and Fiat 600 becoming very successful. During the 1950s and 1960s, Fiat continued to expand its product line to include trucks, buses and tractors, and became one of the leading car manufacturers in Europe. However, during the 1970s and 1980s, Fiat experienced economic difficulties due to the crisis in the automotive industry in Italy. But the company managed to recover by focusing on the production of compact and economical cars, such as the Fiat Panda and the Fiat Uno.
